Collection

Image
For this project, I created a collection and a means for display. For a while I wasn't sure what the collection would consist of, as I didn't think I collected anything; until after a few days I remembered my collection of socks. I could not display the collection in its full glory, unfortunately, as many of the socks were at a different location. However, I was able to pull together a considerable mount of socks, with enough to create several fun displays with. In a way the collection is the 4 things I did with the socks, but really it is the collecting of the socks I think that I have turned into art, as this now becomes a sort of life long performance piece in that I will always be wearing one of the pairs. Played largely with the whimsical side of the collection and the various ways I could combine them given their unique shape and color as a building material.      The first display was just a mount of socks, difficult to see the size of through ...

Video Project

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OZqxO5AnVJ1qZG6PPMf3_tjlrupbLDYj/view?usp=sharing For this project, I made a video that played with the role of the monster in a horror movie. I started with the idea of making a horror movie where everyone was the monster, playing with the perspective of who was really afraid of who. The video starts with the seeming normalcy of peaceful shots that descend into scarier shots, but does not end with a simple chase of the monster after the victims. It is ambiguous the entire time who or what the monster is, only that there is generally a sense of fear present. In the last scene, the tables are turned, and the victim who was assumedly stalked all along by the monster ends up being the one who seems the scariest. I distinguished who's perspective was being played out using sound effects and different visual effects, but in the end attempted to blur these effects to make it ambiguous that there ever were any differences in the characters or the "m...

Performance PIEce

Image
For this project, there was the set goal of embodying generosity in a performance piece and an accompanying artwork. I had a number of ways that I wished to express generosity in the era of a pandemic, but eventually I came to realize that the way I best liked to give to others was by baking them a pie. The gift in baking a pie, for me, has always been in the process of making it, and for some reason baking pies has been something that I have drawn a great deal of joy from. Therefore my goal for the art piece was to in some way allow others to feel the same joy that I got in the process of baking a pie.  I chose a chocolate pecan pie, as it has always been my most popular recipe. It is largely a recipe of my own creation, and I have it had it documented better in my memory than in any physical place. To ensure that everyone would enjoy the pie that I baked, I woke up early on the morning of the performance day and closely documented every step in making the pie, so that while...

Ritual and Personal Space

Image
Prowl Logs 1- black cat runs by. Venus is especially bright. Quiet tonight. Many rooms are unlocked. Colder than it has been. Stayed around the GLC this time. Uneventful. 2- got legitimately scared walking to the art building. Venus is even brighter than before. Lots of weird noises. Crescent moon is very visible. Keep thinking I’m seeing things. Adams is very calming. Lots of lights, I can see clearly. Walking back is not as bad. Lone pinecone is a little interesting. Parking lots and open doors are inherently disquieting. Got a little scared at the end when I heard water hitting the ground and thought it was footsteps. Glad to be back in my room. 3- not as scary. Moon is clear behind the trees. Venus is once again super bright. Orions belt is clear. There are strange trails of ants along the ground. The campus is peaceful and serene. There is a low noise like the whistling of wind through a canyon. I go to the observatory. Here I am a little afraid, but can see the stars more c...

Meet in the Middle Project

Image
For this project, myself and two partners were to find the location right in the middle of the three of us. This happened to be an intersection of several roads, surrounding a roundabout. There were several potential projects we could make with this location, but one of the first things we noticed was the number of arrows everywhere pointing people to where they should go. Almost every sign in the roundabout had an arrow and pushed for travelers to be directed counterclockwise, and although it was this significant place of crossroads, it is never thought about in any way other than that.      Using this as a leaping point, we decided to create more signs pointing in other directions. At first the idea was to direct attention in ways other than what the original signs were intending. This idea developed in a more whimsical direction when we began considering the colors of signs and types of signs we could make. Bright pink could draw back to neon signs...

Measuring Histories Project

Image
For this project, I wanted to measure something about my life over the course of the short time that I have been back at college. To do this, and as a jumping off point of the project, I took note of and drew a quick one minute sketch of everything that I ate while here, right after I ate it. I saw this as a way to create a sort of self portrait, in the sense of "you are what you eat." I found this to be really insightful, as I got to see what I would resort to eating now that I was back at college during the pandemic. I planned to fill up a full page with sketches in the week that I was documenting this, but only filled up half a page, as I did not end up eating as much as I had originally intended. However, this seemed to add to the experience, as I am not done eating with the conclusion of this project, but could continue documenting these things for the rest of my life if I wanted to create a life-long self portrait.      From here, I realized tha...
