Meet in the Middle Project
For this project, myself and two partners were to find the location right in the middle of the three of us. This happened to be an intersection of several roads, surrounding a roundabout. There were several potential projects we could make with this location, but one of the first things we noticed was the number of arrows everywhere pointing people to where they should go. Almost every sign in the roundabout had an arrow and pushed for travelers to be directed counterclockwise, and although it was this significant place of crossroads, it is never thought about in any way other than that.
Using this as a leaping point, we decided to create more signs pointing in other directions. At first the idea was to direct attention in ways other than what the original signs were intending. This idea developed in a more whimsical direction when we began considering the colors of signs and types of signs we could make. Bright pink could draw back to neon signs, and a variety of confused signs with no real end point hints to a sort of wonderland theme. Turning this traffic point into a fun place of crossroads that calls into question all directions with no real intention besides the confusion of destination and location. More signs that disagree on where they are going, in multiple dimensions, asks what a mid-point between paths really means, while keeping the concept light-hearted and open to where the traveler wants to go. This by extension made the existing arrows seem as though they were merely whimsical as well, which was a fun after-effect of putting up extra signs. We did not leave the signs up for more than a minute for safety purposes, but while they were up it seemed to change the entire feeling of the roundabout from a stoic traffic control place into a silly confusion of direction and arrows.
